Tonight was spent trying to figure out where I left my Ginny sweater. It has been rather slow going, especially since I only seem to be knitting on it during Tuesday night knitting.

But the end is in sight. I started the decreases for the arm hole. That means that there isn’t much more to knit on the pieces, then I give it a bath and block it. And then it is on to finishing. With any luck at all, I might just get the darn thing finished this year instead of next.

I so wish that I could have spent today with my own father, but I had fun hanging out with Dennis and my girls today instead. I am so thankful to have my father still around, and even more thankful that he was around when I small. I have fond memories of camping trips, hikes, bicycle rides and long training runs. Above all, I am glad that he took the time to do things with us kids.

Husbeast is a great dad and I love watching him interact with my girls. Although our annual trip to the golf course was rained out, I hope that we can find a few hours next weekend to head out to the golf course.

The girls made Husbeast waffles for breakfast, and I made BLT sandwiches for dinner. Not bad for a rainy Sunday!

I’ve been knitting away at this test knitting project. I kind of missed the deadline for completion, but I have soldiered on, steadfastly plugging away, carefully checking off each row as I finished it.

Tonight I attended a gymnastics clinic for the parents. In the world of gymnastics competition, there are many times where we see the kid’s performance as wonderful, definitely worthy of a high score. Then the score is flashed and there is a moment of complete confusion that leaves most of us totally baffled as to the final result.

The clinic was designed to give us a glimpse into the world of deductions. I think that I am now a bit less confused and have a clearer insight into a different perspective.

About the time my eyes began to to glaze over the amount of information overloading my brain, I realized what was wrong with the test knitting project. I missed a row. Once on the first go around. Then I did it again. Now I know why I was frustrated with the whole thing.

So I left the clinic knowing two things. That I will never again second guess the scoring of a gymnastics meet. Secondly, now that I realized what where the error on my knitting, I have frogged back to the the first mistake and am happily re-knitting the sock. It looks so much better!

155/365 one flew away

I may be having way too much fun with these pigeons.

Of course I don’t actually have any pipe clears laying around, so that part will have to wait. And as an added bonus, they got to be the feature of my 365 photo for today!

Right before my surgery in March, I received a lovely package from Laura at the Unique Sheep. In it was a lovely handknit cowl, bright, cheery and full of friendship and love. It seemed at the time to be a totally random event and it warmed my heart more than I can even begin to verbalize.

Moving forward to this past weekend, a dear friend of mine from college came down from Alaska to stay with us for a few days. Ann was the very first friend that I made in college and we have stayed in contact all of these years, sharing our joys, sorrows and friendship. She was down here for medical reasons and I convinced her to make a girl’s weekend out of it.

I asked her if there was anything specific that she wanted to do, since she doesn’t get down to this neck of the woods very often. “Nope” she said, “Just spend time with you.”

knitting it forward

And spend time together we did. We talked until we tired of talking, sat in companionable silence for a bit, then chattered away again. We laughed at each other, our children and husbands. We had cupcakes just for fun. In my book it was the best birthday present ever. I finished the above pair of socks while she was here and handed them over. The pattern is Serendipity (I modified the pattern with a standard heel rather than a short row heel) and the yarn is from the recent Sip n Stitch from the Unique Sheep. Of course I didn’t keep the ball band from the yarn, so I can’t remember the colourway, but I love love love the way that it knit up.

And the best part? It really felt like I was knitting it forward. The cowl from March really wasn’t so random after all.

While I love the fact that there is no guessing on the second sock, I am still not convinced that it is the way to go when knitting a pair of socks. The advantage was that there was no second sock syndrome, I didn’t have to redo the toe on the second sock several times and both socks are exactly the same number of rows.

The disadvantage is that the project isn’t nearly as portable, I was constantly having to untangle my yarn and it seemed to take two times longer than I thought it would.
