Summer days and family

We have actually have had a couple of summery weather type days. They happen so rarely in June that they are more like a teaser of days to come after the fourth of July. Yesterday our niece was married, so some of us got together with family at Greenlake, to enjoy each other’s company while folks were still in town.

After the trip to the lake I wandered around a bit with my camera and caught this poppy, just after the petals had dropped off.

For some reason or another, photographic opportunities like this always intrigue me and challenge me like nothing else. It is part of what makes me love photography so much.

On another note, I finished a sock today. Unfortunately it is super sekrit knitting, so I can’t really show a photo of it. Now to cast on the other sock.

Monday Meanderings

This morning’s meanderings are another mixed bag. This weekend was Easter and for a change of pace, the girls hid eggs for us after they finished their egg hunt. I hadn’t been on an Easter egg hunt for years. They did a great job of hiding the eggs and Husbeast and I had a blast searching for the elusive eggs. Another family tradition has been created!

With Easter comes bunnies and I had a lovely time creating these little guys. The pattern is Tiny Baby Bunnies, by Anna over at MochoMochi Land. I don’t know how she manages to create so many different little things, but they are perfect for using odds and ends of yarn.

Saturday was beautiful. I think that Seattle has some of the best blue skies when the clouds are away. I went for a long walk and enjoyed every minute of it!

Finally, sock blanket three is officially finished. For this blanket I used balls with greater yardage to create the rectangles. It definitely creates a different look, but I am not sure that I would do it again. Shann loves it and I think that it was quite appropriate that it was finished on her half birthday.

Believe it or not, it was the only picture I managed to capture yesterday as I completely forgot to grab my camera for the egg hunt. That makes me sad, as some of the hiding places were truly remarkable.

I’ve had a digital camera for quite some time now. I may not always be the quickest person in the room, but eventually I catch on. I realized recently that with a quick change of settings I can take photos in black and white!

Over the course of the years that the Husbeast and I have been together, he has picked up several of these types of masks. Fiona is taking a photography class this semester and we were throwing around ideas while she was playing with some of the masks.

Today is a palindrome day 01022010. The numbers are the same forward as backward and for some odd reason or another it really amuses me. Silly things like that really capture my attention, but I really couldn’t tell you why. Just interesting I guess.

Yesterday the girls and I took off to visit friends that live on Bainbridge Island. Wendy and I went to college together, played soccer together and three of her girls are around the same ages my two girls are. We love going over there and spending time, usually just hanging out. Many years ago I taught Wendy to knit and I love seeing the projects that she has created over the years. Now she is learning to spin as well.

To make a long story short, their family will soon be relocated to the Midwest. We will miss having having them around, they are part of our extended family by choice. I am thankful that the technology available makes it so easy to stay in contact, but it doesn’t replace the physical proximity that we have enjoyed over the years. When I learned that they would be moving from the area, I knew that I wanted to do something extra special for Wendy, something that I knew that she would appreciate and treasure. At the time I was over half way done with this sock blanket, so I decided that this one would be for her.

Happy Birthday Mom! You are still young and beautiful to me. Thank you for all that you have done for me, especially the gifts of knitting and reading. I can’t imagine my life without either of them.

A conversation from the Weebug house, where the Husbeast was looking for something in the dresser:

Me: Whatcha looking for?
Husbeast: My brains.
Me: Generally speaking you don’t usually store them in the sock drawer.
Husbeast: Well maybe I put them there for safekeeping and forgot. You know, its safe place, its soft, its fuzzy…
Me: Well that certainly explains the lint between the ears.

Ahh, the joys of twenty years. And yes, we then collapsed in a fit of giggling.

Re-Entry

I’ve returned from the weekend, only to find that I am ever farther behind and more jumbled up than usual. Things are settling back towards whatever counts as normal around here, so I will just be grateful for that. The daily battle of the will where homework is concerned continues, work is a chaotic pit of busy and I sometimes think that I meet myself coming and going more often than not.

Getting to spend time with the parental units without the responsiblity of my own parenting tasks was nice. I did some cleaning for Mom, watched plenty of football with Papa and worked on some knitting stuff. Sometimes it is good to have nothing planned.

The services and memorial for Mrs. Guard were a wonderful celebration of a life well lived. The church was packed for the funeral mass, I delivered my portion of the eulogy without too much stumbling and enjoyed the stories that were shared among friends and family. We forget sometimes, that one person can have a great deal of impact upon the the lives that cross through their own. This was a definite reminder that this actually happens.

Fall colour is emerging more every day. It was interesting to me how much more colour there was on the trip back to Seattle than four days earlier. I truly love this time of year.
